PCATT Then & Now: The Grand Finale! 🎉 The Vision That Launched 25 Years!
Before we celebrate PCATT's official birthday on December 6th, we conclude our "Then and Now" series with the remarkable story of our founding, as told by Don Bourassa, PCATT's first director. His words capture the dedication that created our center:
"HCC joined the National Coalition of Advanced Technology Centers (NCATC) in 1989. At the time the NCATC had 40-50 member colleges and would grow to more than 100 member colleges. Although HCC did not have an advanced technology center, many thought it was a great idea. After 11 years and lobbying by many people, several legislators bought the idea and convinced the governor of its merit.
PCATT was thus born through a significant grant from the governor of Hawaii. That was great news for the people charged with creating PCATT. The bad news: no facilities, no equipment, no promotional materials, and no trainers. What we did have is a vision of what PCATT could be. Armed with that vision, we set out to fill all the voids. Building 2 on campus was significantly renovated. Many deals were made with both departments and faculty to make this happen. In the end, we secured our facilities. Once facilities were in place, furniture and equipment followed. For promotional materials we turned to the students of the Commercial Arts program for their creative talents. Finally, for our initial trainers, we recruited people who were very intelligent, and most critically, great teachers. All of these accomplishments happened in one year. Without the dedicated and creative people that initially brought PCATT to fruition, I would probably not be sending my congratulations to PCATT on 25 years of achieving its mission to the workforce of Hawaii.”
Thank you to Don Bourassa and the pioneering team! Their vision and one year of incredible work set the stage for our mission.
