Your phone can be your ID in Hawaii! Since August 2024, the state has offered a mobile driver's license (mDL) feature for Apple devices, bringing convenience and security right to your pocket.
What is an mDL? It's a secure, digital version of your driver's license that lives on your smartphone. The biggest benefit? It allows for "selective disclosure," so you can prove your age without handing over your full name and address.
While this is a step forward, it's important to be aware of the cybersecurity risks. The National Cybersecurity article reminds us of threats like fake apps and malware.
Stay safe with these tips:
Only use the official app from the State of Hawaii.
Keep your phone secured with a strong passcode or biometrics (Face ID/Touch ID).
Always keep your phone’s operating system and apps updated to patch security vulnerabilities.
Be skeptical of anyone asking for a screenshot of your digital ID.
This is a great example of how technology is changing how we verify our identity, but it's up to us to use it responsibly.

On our next segment of PCATT Then & Now, we're sharing reflections from those who shaped our journey. Here's a wonderful testimonial from our esteemed colleague Beryl/Program Manager @moribee12869 , whose legacy continues to inspire us!
A 25-Year Journey: From a Spark to a Standard
"The name we were given, Pacific Center for Advanced Technology Training, sounded impressive, but we were far from that when we started in 2000. One day while turning on some of the computers in our training lab, I shorted out all the electricity not only in that lab but also throughout our 5th floor location. I remember thinking, how are we ever going to teach advanced technology topics?
We built PCATT from a small training operation to what it is today. It’s all about people — my co-workers, our instructors, our students and customers. Together, we created what we proudly call the Pacific Center for Advanced Technology Training, delivering support, services, and training both in-person and virtually for 25 years."
The Foundation of Future Tech
This story highlights a truth that remains relevant today: every technological revolution, from electricity to Artificial Intelligence (AI), relies on foundational infrastructure and the right skills. Just as electricity became the ubiquitous utility that powered the 20th century, AI is now emerging as the foundational utility of the 21st century. At PCATT, we continue to train the people needed to harness these powerful forces and build the future.
We're so grateful for Beryl's invaluable contributions and delighted she continues to enjoy life beyond PCATT!
